Chocolate Hills
 |
An experience which must not be missed, the Chocolate Hills are about 1200
hills which are about 30 to 50 m high and covered with grass. When the grass dries out, it's green colour turns to brown - hence the name Chocolate
Hills.
|
| It is not completely understood how this singular natural landscape
developed. According to some
geologists, Bohol was under water during pre-historic times. Originally deposited during volcanic eruptions, the sea bed was smoothed and rounded off
gradually by the currents of the water, resulting in this unusual formation. |

|
| The trip from Alona Beach to the
Chocolate Hills takes about
2 hours. The route leads first across Tagbilaran on the coastal road through
Loay. From there we head inland. |

|
 |
Past
the Loboc River with its waterfalls and by beautiful rice field
systems, one comes again and again through smaller villages, where you
will meet the extremely hospitable locals. |
|
At the Loboc River, you can travel into the forest to see the Tarsiers. These are the smallest primates in the world. In addition, boat trips are available offering
spectacular scenic views. |
 |
 |
About 10 km before Carmen, a signpost/guide leads you to the right into
the Chocolate Hills naturepark. On the highest of the numerous hills
there are 293 stairs. From there the visitor is offered an unbelievably beautiful view with a
marvelous panorama. |
|
The total distance is approx. 85
km. All along the route, small stores
line the road. Here you can find all kinds of snacks and refreshments, also
that spare roll of film which you may need. |
